Me and Food (now)

People who know me personally, know it very well that I have always been a foodie. And that is obvious because my Aai makes the ‘bestest’ food preparations. Let it be the simple dal khichadi or multi-layered biryani, she makes it the best. So now I grew up eating this delicious food and loved it. And I grew up to be a ‘healthy’ person. This theory of me being healthy was associated with the fact that I was born a ‘healthy’ baby.

Carrying this belief all through my life I never questioned my weight till there came a time when my legs would pain from prolonged standing. I would feel breathless after barely climbing a flight of stairs. When I checked my weight, I was no longer healthy, but an overweight person. At that time I was fortunate to have come across a Zumba class along with a diet program. The Zumba class was fantastic and helped me build my stamina. In the diet program, I was basically asked to stop sugar in all forms including fruits. So I was on a no-sugar, no-fruit, no-wheat, and no-milk diet. I could still eat rice or cheese though. I was determined to get fit and hence I followed it religiously. And I started seeing results. In a span of 9-10 months, I lost about 13 kgs. I felt fit, looked fit, and looked young (at least in my eyes). Since I had reached an ideal weight with respect to my height, I felt that I could now get off this diet and start eating normally again - eating everything that I used to eat before. And you all can guess what happened after that...

I started gaining my weight back. Little by little I was gaining all this weight again. And that is when I realized that going on and off a diet is really not a good idea. If eliminating certain things is making you lose weight, adding them again in your diet will definitely get all the lost weight back on you. A disclaimer here, I am not a dietitian or a health coach so what I am saying here is what I felt through my cycle of weight loss and weight gain. I was a little skeptical now to try anything new. Because I didn't want to do something for a particular amount of time where I had to give up certain food items to help me lose weight. I wanted to have freedom in my choice to eat what I wanted to eat.

At this time, Sanket came across this program called WildFit and its 90-day transformational program, which is conceptualized and conducted by Eric Edmeades, a nutritional anthropologist and food psychologist, helping people around the world transform their relationship with food. Sanket was impressed with the online introductory class that he attended. So he asked me to watch the recording. I was quite blown away by the whole concept of food and emotional cravings that Eric was presenting in that class. He was talking about different types of hunger that one experiences. He was talking about the food market industry and how it manipulates us to eat what is not good for our health. Eric was very clear that he was not going to prescribe a diet for us, he was going to help make good decisions when it comes to what we eat and our health.

We both were skeptical as it involved a huge investment but we wanted to give it a try... Fingers crossed and ready to learn and try something new, we enrolled for the WidFit 90-day program. This program started in February and ended in April. And, yes, we spend the last 2 months of this program under the COVID-19 lockdown. We were so committed to transforming our health.

Today, 2 months after the program has ended I would like to share my experience about this program.

First and foremost, WildFit is not a diet program. It is a lifestyle program. That means we are still living WildFit after the 90-day journey and it's not at all restrictive. It is freedom!

It has changed the way I eat food. It has changed the way I enjoy my food. It has changed the way I choose what I want to eat. And please note… I CHOOSE what I want to eat. There are no restrictions, there is no pressure to not eat certain things.

Both Sanket and I feel a lot energetic about these changes in our life. Our stamina and energy levels have gone up. The lethargic feeling that I used to feel during the day is gone. We both have released weight and it has been steady for the last 2 months. More than me Sanket saw a lot of positive changes with respect to his health. He had a throat-clearing issue (mucus in the throat) for many years now. That issue just disappeared ever since we started this. He had a tremendous dust allergy… and now it's gone. Lower back pain … gone. And this is without any exercise or medications. When we started this program we both were enrolled in a gym but with the lockdown enforced, we couldn’t even step out for a walk.

So if it is not a diet program, how does WildFit actually work?

During the 90-day journey, Eric basically educates us about how food and food choices have evolved over the years. He talks about how the food marketing industry has been manipulating our decisions to choose the food that we eat. He helps us understand our cravings and how we can overcome them. He helps us see the benefits of choosing the right food. He helps us understand a ‘food timeline,’ a phenomenal tool to use when it comes to transformation. Throughout the journey, Eric and his team of coaches take us through a series of food choices so that we understand how food really works for us. And at the end of the program, he empowers us to decide how we want to live our life.

And after our 90-day program, we chose to live WildFit, simply because we didn’t want to go back to our pre-WildFit lifestyle and eating habits. Believe me, I am so glad I did this program. But yes I have to accept here, these 90-days need a lot of patience, discipline, and investment in terms of time and money. Yes, your ‘food devil’ will popup every now and then, and you will need the grit to quieten it.

With all of the uncertainty in the world, you might be turning to food as a source of comfort. Emotional or binge-eating is at an all-time high. When I go to the grocery stores all I see is people piling up on packaged and processed foods. Eric often quotes, “Your immune system is your last line of defense against any disease.” Then why do we weaken our defense systems with our own hands?

The bottom line is that WildFit transformed my health. And I want to give you the gift of good health for the rest of your lives. If anything I said resonated with you at any level, I would like to invite you to try WildFit for yourself. Incidentally, Eric and his team are coming up with a 14-day foundational WildFit Program. These 14 days are instrumental in laying the foundation to change and will help you learn the psychology behind why you eat the way you do. This alone will do heaps of benefits for you and your health.

This step-by-step program starts from Monday, 13th July and it costs you a fraction of the cost we paid for the larger program. The investment you'd make is only $27 (approx INR 2,200) and you get 14 days of video training, three times a week of live video group coaching, and a private FB community space. You can watch all the videos in your own time and recordings of live coaching calls will be shared in case you cannot attend one at the designated time.

Although we’re realizing the importance of health and a strong immune system, emotional eating is at an all-time high. One scroll through Instagram/Facebook and you’ll see several references to “Quarantine Snacks” your friends (and probably you too) are indulging in.

If you are ready to make your health a priority in 2020 as I did, jump on this 14-day program with Eric and see for yourself how your life changes for good. The journey starts on Monday, 13th July 2020.

P.S. Both Sanket and I recently bought a 18-point body-composition weighing scale from Amazon, and based on all the calculations it did, it showed Sanket’s metabolic age to be 26 and mine to be 28 :-)
